Daniel Pitra was born in 1993 in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. He has been composing and performing in public on various musical instruments since the age of 4. At the age of 6 he played Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in G major with a chamber orchestra for the first time in Bad-Alexandersbad (Germany). He received foundations of his musical education from his parents and at the Music School Šmeralova in Karlovy Vary. Here he learned to play drums, violin and recorders and later he also started to study composition. He has over 400 composing and arranging projects under his belt. He studied at the Prague Conservatory with Jiří Gemrot (composition), Pavel Razím (drums), Radek Krampl (marimba) and Petr Holub (timpani). He then studied at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory and College in Prague with Karel Růžička (composition) and Camillo Caller (drums, percussions) and graduated from the Jan Deyl Conservatory and High School with Pavel Polívka (drums) and Jan Kasal (melodic percussions). In 2002 he won the first prize in the regional round of the music schools violin competition. In December of the same year he performed Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in A minor with the school orchestra. In 2003 he participated in the prestigious Kocián Violin Competition. Since the age of 9 he has been active in the children’s rock band “Flea’s band”, with which he won 1st prize in the national round of the Children’s Porta 2004 in Prague. There he also received a special jury prize for exceptional performance. His composition “Every Day Is Very Happy” won the national round of the music school composition competition in 2004. At the age of 13, he composed music and songs for the devil’s fairy tale “Trampoty čertíka Culínka”, performed by the “Divadlo Kapsa” around the whole Czech Republic. In the music schools recorder competition in 2006 he won the first prize in the regional round. He also won the same award in percussion. He participated in Jiří Stivín’s weekend improvisation courses and the Summer School of Early Music in Prachatice. In 2007 he won the 2nd prize in the national round of the music schools competition in the category “Jazz orchestras” with the big band “Gringos”. He also played in the excellent student jazz combo “Swingdows”. In 2008 he became a finalist of the 2nd year of the national composition competition “Gramodeska” with the song “Kanón a zvon” (The Cannon and the Bell). Furthermore, in 2009 he was awarded for the fourth time “For excellent representation” of the Karlovy Vary Region. A year later his “Suite Giazzistica” was premiered by the Pikap Quartet at the Karlovy Vary Jazz Festival. At the “Zeit für Neue Musik – Liszt-Impulse” festival in Bayreuth, Germany in 2012, his composition “Rhapsody in Czech” for flute, cello and piano was premiered. In the same year, the “Divertimento d’Amore” for oboe and string quartet was performed for the first time as part of the 11th annual “Iceland Day” in Prague. Since 2014, he has been a guest of several leading Czech orchestras, including the Czech Philharmonic, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Prague Philharmonic, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, and Pilsen Philharmonic. Since 2019, he is a permanent member of the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, where he has served as deputy percussion section leader since 2022. He is also involved in professional arrangements of popular and jazz music for symphony orchestra or arranging songs and other compositions for various instrumental ensembles.
